Grant Origination
The University of South
Dakota Sanford School of Medicine encourages all academic faculty to
engage in professional development. In an effort to assist
faculty in their pedagogical advancement, the SSOM faculty development
committee has funds available for faculty travel. Any faculty
wishing to use faculty development funds should complete the following
application process. The grant will cover up to 50% of the
total requested to a maximum of $1,500.00.
Grant Administration
A
subcommittee of 3 members of the Faculty
Development Committee (clinical, BBS, academic) will review all
applications and recommend approval based
on the merits of the application, the needs of the SSOM and the
availability of
funding.
Committee
members applying for
funding (or spouses/partners,or
family members)
are to recuse themselves from serving on the subcommittee.
Final
approval will be granted by the Chair
of the Faculty Development Committee.
Grant Guidelines
Department
Support
The
faculty member must be supported in the
application by his/her department chair.
The
SSOM faculty development funds may be utilized to provide up to 50%
of the
expenses related to the program up to $1,500.00.
The
balance must be covered through other funding
sources such as the faculty
member’s department, division, clinic, hospital, grants, etc.
It
is the faculty member’s responsibility to
obtain the remainder of the funding.
Funding
Amount / Limitation
SSOM faculty development funds can be used to cover 50% of
travel costs up to a maximum of $1,500.00 total
funding.
Events Funded
External
career/leadership development programs
that are sponsored by the AAMC, AMA, universities or other public
agencies will
be considered.
CME
programs related to a
faculty member’s clinical discipline will NOT be considered for funding
through
this mechanism.
Peer Teaching
The
sponsored individual is expected to bring back “lessons learned” and
disseminate them to the USD SSOM faculty, staff and trainees.
The mechanism for such dissemination must be
specified in the application, but is up to the applicant. Any
all assistance needed will coordinated through the
Office
of Continuing Professional Development. To

Application Process
Timeframe
The application should be
submitted to the faculty development committee at least 4-6 weeks prior
to the deadline provided by the external program will be
given preference.
Application
Applicant must electronically submit an updated
CV and a Application
to be consider for funding
Requests Per Applicant
In
general, an individual may avail of one such opportunity every 3-5
years. Applicants
who are not selected may reapply and should state that they are doing
so in
future applications.
Funding Decision
Decision Guidelines
Committee
approval is based on the merits of the application, the needs of the
SSOM and the availability of funding.
Notification of Funding
Applicants will
be notified by the chair of the
faculty development committee of the
review committee decision.
